A woman had just arrived at Lake Thurmond in South Carolina to do some kayaking when she noticed something unusual. She kayaked there all the time, but that day something was different. As she headed down to the water, she saw something moving — and realized there was a pile of hairless babies abandoned on the shore.
The babies turned out to be puppies who were missing most of their fur. They were all pretty shy as their rescuer approached them, but she knew that no matter what, she had to get them to safety.
The puppies soon arrived in the care of Final Victory Animal Rescue, and no one there could believe their story.
“All four puppies were very emaciated and covered in demodex mange,” Leslie Rider Osmanski, medical manager and foster coordinator at Final Victory Animal Rescue, told The Dodo. “Their demodex mange was so severe that they were almost completely hairless.”
The rescue nicknamed the little family “the waters edge puppies” and quickly went about settling them in. They received medicated baths and began warming up to their rescuers as soon as they started feeling a little better.
The puppies were aptly named Kayak, Canoe, Paddle Board and Raft. No one has any idea how they ended up on the edge of the lake in the first place, but everyone at the rescue is so grateful to the kayaker for dropping everything to save them.
The boy puppies, Paddle Board and Raft, both already have adopters lined up for when they’re fully healed. The girls, Kayak and Canoe, are still available and hoping to be claimed by their forever families very soon.
